Your Laughter

My dirty laundry is strewn all over the place,

and the dishes in the kitchen sink rot so much

that I have to go check each night

if there’s a dead rat in there.

Still, I miss you

not for the clean dishes

nor ironed uniforms

but

for your peals of laughter

more musical and sacred

than a Buddhist temple’s

on a distant mountaintop.
